No visible water, no fence, no lost plaza. A dry deck fountain hides its basin under the paving and sends jets up through the surface — a play and show space that returns to a plain walkable square the moment it switches off.
The dry deck format — also called a dry floor fountain — solves the plaza problem: cities want the life and cooling of a fountain without fencing off their main square. The reservoir, pumps and pipework sit below ground; at surface level there are only flush jet nozzles and underwater lights set into the paving. Run the program and the square becomes a choreographed water space. Switch it off and the same square hosts markets, ceremonies and everyday foot traffic.
Aqualume supplies the dry deck as a complete system: underground structure design, jet and lighting layout, the control program, and the drainage and water-treatment thinking that keeps a pedestrian surface safe and clean. The reference project at Lenin Square in Baikonur is a dry deck musical fountain — its reference page describes the installation.
A dry deck fountain is walked on, played in and cleaned like a street, so its engineering priorities differ from a basin fountain. Jet pressure at the surface is set for public contact; the paving falls to drainage channels that return water to the underground reservoir; filtration and disinfection keep recirculated water suitable for a play environment; and the nozzle plates are specified to sit flush and stay slip-aware when wet.
These decisions belong in the design stage, not on site. Aqualume's design review works through the jet field layout against pedestrian flows — entrances, crossings, seating edges — so the show pattern and the walking pattern never fight each other. The Baikonur reference shows the format at civic scale: a full musical program on a square that returns to ceremony use when the water stops.

Explore →If this format is new to your project team, the dry deck design basics article works through the invisible half of the system — reservoir and plant sizing, jet fields laid against walking routes, drainage falls and water treatment — in the order a design should decide them.
It needs below-ground space for the reservoir and plant, sized to the jet field. The design stage confirms the excavation scope against your site's existing underground services.
Both. The same control system runs gentle daytime play patterns and a full evening musical program with lighting — the Baikonur reference is a musical dry deck fountain.
The system drains down and the surface is simply paving. Nothing stands above ground to protect, fence or work around.
