Fountain Programming & Commissioning

Commissioning is opening night, done properly: the installed system tested end to end, the show program written and tuned on the real water, and your operators handed a fountain they can run.

  • System testing
  • Operator handover

Scope commissioning for your project

On this pageA fountain is finished when the program performs on real water — not when the last cable is connected.

Programming & Commissioning: Where the Show Becomes Real

The service runs in two movements. Commissioning first proves the machine: every pump, valve, nozzle unit, light and circuit is exercised; flows and levels are set; the control layers — PLC for the plant, DMX for the performance — are verified against the installed field. Only on a proven machine does programming begin: choreography written cue by cue against the actual water, in the actual basin, watched from the actual audience positions.

That order matters because water never matches its rendering exactly. A swing arc carries differently in the site's air; a colour reads differently against the city's night; a chase that sang in simulation needs its tempo adjusted by a breath. Programming on site absorbs those differences into the show instead of leaving them as disappointments. The result is a program — usually several: the full evening show, quieter daytime patterns, and event variants — stored on the control system your operators will run.

  1. System testing

Every circuit and unit exercised; flows, levels and interlocks verified across the installed field.

  2. Show programming

Choreography written on the real water against the installed zones, lights and music.

  3. Tuning from the audience

Programs reviewed from the real viewpoints and adjusted — tempo, heights, colour balance.

  4. Operator handover

Your team runs the system under supervision: schedules, program selection, routine checks.

After Opening Night

A commissioned fountain is a beginning, not a conclusion. The control system holds a library, and libraries grow: seasonal programs, festival variants, a new signature piece for an anniversary. Because the programming discipline is documented at handover — zones, addresses, cue structure — later programs can be commissioned against the installed system without reopening the plant. The maintenance checklist article describes the routine that keeps the machine worthy of its programs between visits.

If you are taking over an existing fountain whose shows disappoint, this service is also the entry point: an assessment of the installed zones and control, then a reprogramming scope. Many 'equipment problems' are program problems wearing a disguise.

Ask for a programming assessment

The Handover Pack: What You Should Be Holding

When commissioning ends, the venue should hold a pack, not a memory: the program library with its schedule, the zone and addressing documentation that future programming will be written against, the test records from the system proving, and the operator routine — daily, weekly, seasonal — in the form the maintenance checklist on this site assumes. If any element is missing, the fountain's future programming and maintenance are already more expensive than they should be.

Ask for the pack's table of contents at quotation stage. Suppliers who commission professionally produce it as a matter of routine; suppliers who do not will find the request educational. Either way, your venue's next decade is cheaper for having asked.

Programming & Commissioning Questions

Who chooses the music?

You do — the program is written to your music and your venue's licensing position. The design stage can advise on what choreographs well: dynamics and structure matter more than genre.

How many programs does a project include?

The count is a scope item agreed per project — typically the main show plus daytime and event variants. Additional programs can be commissioned later against the same installed system.

Can commissioning fix an existing fountain's weak show?

Often, yes. If the installed zones and control are sound, reprogramming is the highest-value intervention available. The assessment will say honestly when the limit is hardware instead.
